A Shapland & Petter Oak Chest of Drawers
This superb Shapland & Petter chest of two short over three long drawers is a wonderful mix of an eighteenth century furniture style with an Art & Crafts/Art Nouveau flourish in the heart-shaped back plates of the brass handles. The top is veneered with well-figured oak and has stringing of ebony and box on both sides of a contrasting crossband. This decoration is repeated around the drawer fronts, which are veneered with pollard oak. It stands on bracket feet and the locks are stamped 'S & P B'.
Shapland & Petter are renowned for their Arts & Crafts furniture, but they also produced period and revivalist styles as well. This item is a fine example of the two being combined, probably to suit the request of a particular client.
106.5cm wide, 107.5cm high and 53cm deep.
In very good condition with the original finish revived. A few small sections of the crossbanding to the drawer fronts and the veneer to the plinth have been professionally replaced.
