An Inlaid Mahogany Bureau by Shapland & Petter
This imposing bureau is a splendid piece of design from the Arts & Crafts period by Shapland & Petter. Made of mahogany, it has impressive copper handles and hinges and a central inlaid panel of a townscape within wavy-edged moulding. Flattened cornices, square-sectioned spindles, tapering uprights and a shaped apron are further features. The fall front rests on lopers and has a fitted interior of pigeon holes and drawers within.
Unstamped, it is a well-documented design by Shapland & Petter and features in their catalogues as well as on p.13 of Daryl Bennett's book, 'Shapland & Petter of Barnstable, Arts & Crafts Furniture.'
100cm wide, 159cm high and 43cm deep.
It is in overall good and original conditon. The fitted interior is original and intact, though the leather is a replacement. There are a couple of old and scarcely visible cracks on the projections below the gallery and one on the desk above the drawer.
