A Modernist Desk by Betty Joel
Designed by Betty Joel, and made at her Token Works factory in Portsmouth in 1933, this desk is a fine example of British Modernist furniture. It has three graduated drawers and a document rack beneath a leather top and it stands on a plinth of monel metal, which is an alloy of nickel and copper. The flush sides each have three sections of cross-grain veneer. Well known for her use of exotic materials, this desk is made of a well-figured and richly coloured teak.
It bears a paper label for the Token Works on the underside.
It measures 114cm wide, 58cm deep and 79cm high. The kneehole is 57.5cm wide.
It is in good condition with a replacement leather.
