An Art Nouveau Inlaid Mahogany Bureau
Made of faded mahogany, this bold Art Nouveau bureau has a fall front with three inlaid and penwork floral panels that opens to reveal a beautifully fitted interior veneered in satinwood and rosewood. Beneath is a single drawer and a shaped undershelf with further inlaid decoration. It has tapering legs and uprights, shaped feet and an ornate copper handle and hinges.
It measures 128cm high, 71.5cm wide and 54.5cm deep.
It is in good overall condition with its original metalware and fitted interior. It is showing signs of its age, particularly with regards to the fading of the mahogany, which is more pronounced in some areas than others. Cracks to the back feet have been professionally repaired and the writing surface is, unusually, a square of baize inset within a tooled leather border (which can be replaced if required). A small piece of the rosewood veneer from the interior cupboard door is missing and two of the turned drawer handles are sympathetic replacements.
