Heal's

In 1893 Ambrose Heal entered the family firm, a well-respected and rather staid Victorian manufacturer of beds, and transformed it into a leading exponent of the commercial Arts & Crafts Movement.  Under his inspiring leadership it successfully melded together excellent, often innovative, design with a rigorously high standard of machine production.  Country cottage and elaborately inlaid styles were succeeded seamlessly by sleek 1930s furniture, with Cotswold School, Art Deco and Modernist influences all being embraced.  Commercially successful though it remained in the wake of the Second World War, Heal’s never really regained its impetus as a leading designer and it was sold by the family in 1983.
